Summer hiking packing list

Summer in the mountains can range from blazing sun to freezing wind in minutes. When planning for such trips, you don’t want to end up in the mountains with the wrong clothes or low on water. Here’s a simple and practical guide to what you should pack for a summer mountain hike. If you’re also planning to set camp in the mountains, then this article on camping in the mountains will give you everything you need for a comfortable camping trip.

Clothes that work in the mountains

Even though the calendar says summer, the mountain is its own weather universe. Pack clothes that can be worn in several layers and that dry quickly.

This has been included:

  • Thin hiking pants that are easy to walk in
  • Lightweight jacket that withstands wind and rain
  • Thin fleece or wool sweater for breaks
  • Shorts on hot days
  • Hat and buff for cold tops
  • Caps
  • Two pairs of hiking socks

Dress according to the weather and temperature when you start your trip, but have other garments readily available so that you can get dressed quickly if it gets colder. This makes the trip much more comfortable if the weather and temperature fluctuate throughout the day.

Shoes for varied terrain

The surface in the summer can be anything from dry paths to wet bogs. That’s why it’s a good idea to choose good hiking boots for the route you’re taking.

You can choose between:

  • Lightweight hiking shoes with a good sole for warm and dry trails
  • Semi-high mountain boots when we expect rocks or wet areas
  • Simple camp shoes if the trip is long and your feet need some time off

Navigation and safety

Summer often means more people in the mountains, but that’s no reason to ditch your safety gear.

Always have with you:

  • Map and compass
  • Fully charged power bank
  • First aid kit with chafing patch
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Mosquito repellent for valleys and wet areas

Food and energy throughout the day

Summer means longer stages and many meters of altitude. Be careful not to get too excited or go too far without replenishing food and drink. Pack food that provides energy without making your backpack heavy.

A typical daily ration for a full day in the mountains:

  • REAL Turmat for lunch and/or dinner
  • Bars or nuts for snacking
  • Light snacks for quick energy
  • Plenty of water and a bottle that can take a beating

On hot days, there’s often more water than you think. We always check if there are streams along the route. Remember to only fill drinking water from running sources.

Equipment that makes your trip easier

You don’t need a lot of equipment for a good hike. But some things are good to have in your backpack.

This is usually a good idea to include:

  • Windsock
  • Poles if we expect steep terrain
  • Lightweight knife or multi-tool
  • Head lamp even on bright days
  • Small waterproof bags for garbage

Pack smart and light

A good summer hike is all about the balance between comfort and weight. Put clothes in small bags, place the heaviest items near your back and keep snacks easily accessible. The quicker we find things, the more time we have to enjoy the hike.
