What is an MRE?

Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) were first developed for the military but are now widely used by civilians for emergency preparedness, disaster relief, and outdoor activities where regular food isn’t available.

Meals Ready to Eat, or MREs, were first developed for military use as a reliable source of nutrition with a long shelf life. They remain an important part of military operations, but have also been widely adopted for civilian use. MREs are especially useful in emergency preparedness, disaster response, and outdoor activities where regular food options are not available.

What is an MRE (meal, ready to eat)?

Meals Ready to Eat, commonly abbreviated as MREs, are self-contained, individual field rations. Designed to provide a complete meal in situations where traditional food preparation is not possible. Each MRE typically includes an entrée, side dish, dessert, crackers or bread, peanut butter or cheese spread, and a beverage mix.

An important aspect of the MREs is their lightweight, durable and nutritious capabilities.

Civilian MRE for preparedness in cities

Beyond military applications, cities increasingly use MREs for emergency preparedness. Natural disasters, pandemics, and other crises can disrupt food supply chains, making MREs a vital resource.

Cities stock these MREs in emergency shelters and distribute them to affected populations during emergencies. Ensuring that residents have access to nutritious meals when they need them most.
