Alone on Aconcagua: conquering south America’s highest peak

In January 2022, Norwegian adventurer Even Sverdrup embarked on a solo expedition to conquer Aconcagua, South America’s highest peak at 6,962 meters. Known as the “Mountain of Death,” Aconcagua is notorious for its extreme altitude and unpredictable weather, claiming an average of three lives annually.

Sverdrup’s journey was marked by both solitude and camaraderie. While he traveled alone, he connected with fellow climbers along the way, including a group of Norwegians with whom he has since shared other adventures. The expedition tested his limits, especially when he suffered from altitude sickness at 5,500 meters, experiencing severe headaches and nausea.

A poignant moment occurred near the summit when Sverdrup assisted a rescue team searching for a missing climber. Tragically, they found the individual deceased just below the peak, underscoring the mountain’s inherent dangers.
