What is maltodextrin and why we don’t add it
In this article we take a closer look at maltodextrin. While we don’t add it directly, we’ll go through what it is, where it might appear, and why it matters.

While we don’t add it directly, trace amounts may come from suppliers, and we work continuously to reduce or eliminate it.
Why is maltodextrin used?
Manufacturers derive maltodextrin from starch and commonly use it as a food additive. They produce it by breaking down starches from sources like corn, wheat, rice, or potatoes into smaller sugar molecules. Despite its slightly sweet taste, maltodextrin is not classified as a sugar and has a high glycemic index, meaning it can cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels.
Food manufacturers widely use maltodextrin because of its versatile properties. It serves as:
- A thickener or filler to improve texture and consistency.
- A preservative that extends shelf life.
- A source of quick energy in sports and endurance products.
It is often found in processed foods, protein powders, meal replacements, and even some pharmaceutical product
Does REAL meals contain maltodextrin?
We do not directly add maltodextrin to our products. However, tiny amounts may be present in some ingredients we source from our suppliers. We understand that many of our customers prefer products without maltodextrin, and we actively work with our suppliers to adjust their recipes to better align with these preferences.
